Jane Austen… where have you been all my life
Jane… where have you been all my life? Or better yet, how did I not about you? Well, I grew up with only boys. That’s one reason why I did not find Jane until now. About 9 years ago a roommate made me watch Pride & Prejudice (the Colin Firth, long A&E version). Seriously she sat me down and made me – I wasn’t that kind of girly movie girl. Then she laughed at me when I wanted to stay up all night to finish it. I don’t know if I knew that was Jane Austen– but I feel in love with it. Some time down the road I found the Sense and Sensibility movie. A few years later a different roommate turned me on the move Mansfield Park, which was great.
A few months ago I ran into a movie The Jane Austen Book Club. I really enjoyed this movie, but it pointed out to me that Emma was Jane – I had always loved that movie, but had no idea that was Jane. I decided to see what I could find of these last 2 books that I’d never heard of Persuasion and Northanger Abbey. I found them, and also loved them. So I have found Jane, sadly so far only in the movies. But if the movies are this fun, I’m excited to read the books.

Kelly, first of all, you might want to amend your title to say, “Austen.” I’m not being snobby, just thought you’d like to know. I love watching these movies as well. Persuasion is my favorite, but the theatrical version from the ’90s with Cyrian Hyndes. Check it out. I bet you’ll love it. I also love the new BBC Sense and Sensibility. If you love these, you should check out the mini-series adapted from Elizabeth Gaskell Novels. They are, I must say, even better! These include North and South, Wives and Daughters, and Cranford (this last one is not the best, but sweet and fun).
I have to admit, although people seem to think this is shameful, that I like Jane Austen’s storylines, but I’m not totally in love with her writing. The books are all worth writing, but she is not my favorite classic novelist. I’m excited to hear what you think!
